My research interests include the areas of materials and bioanalytical chemistry. Investigations focus on the electrodeposition of nanomaterials of unique composition and phases. Deposition of metals, ceramics, cermets, and semiconductors are studied using electrochemical techniques. These materials are of interest for technological coatings and corrosion protection. Many metals and alloys undergo a corrosion process during use in industry due to attack by solution species. Several surface coatings have been used to protect the surface of these alloys and inhibit corrosion. One area of research focuses on finding new protective layers which are environmentally safe. The use of biological molecules to inhibit corrosion on metals is one ecologically safe route. A thorough understanding of the process of adsorption of these organic molecules is crucial in any description of the electrochemical process. Such an understanding should ultimately lead to an ability to tailor surface properties with grater precision. This work involves a wide range of experimental methods; including, electrochemistry, flow injection analysis, chromatography, x-ray diffraction, scanning probe microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.
Projects within my research group include:
* Characterization and deposition of diamond-like carbon films for corrosion protection and sensor development.
* Production and characterization of cermet materials (ceramic/metal mixtures) as free standing films and coatings for corrosion protection.
* Production of nanoclay/ceramic nanocomposite powders and films for enhanced mechanical properties.
* Investigation of the electrochemical decomposition of PAH's. Study of the decomposition mechanism by coupling electrochemical techniques with high performance liquid chromatography.
