Research

My primary research interests include solution thermodynamics and chromatographic separations on novel liquid crystalline stationary phases. His work involves a wide range of experimental methods, including spectroscopy, chromatography, polarizing light microscopy, and densimetry.

Research projects include:

*Development of expressions for determining solute-solvent association constants from measured solute solubility and chromatographic retention times in binary solvent mixtures.

*Design of gas chromatographic probe methods for investigating properties of binary nematic liquid crystalline stationary phases.

*Characterization of novel nonaqueous lyotroic and transition-metal liquid crystals as gas chromatographic stationary phase liquids.

My secondary research interests center on the photophysical properties of large, multi-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Fluorescence emission spectra of a PAH monomer consists of several vibronic bands.

Roughly twenty-five percent of the PAHs studied exhibit solvent polarity probe behavior as evidenced by the first band's selective emissions intensity enhancement and increasing solvent polarity. Efforts are underway to rationalize this enhancement phenomena at the molecular level and to develop a spectral database for identifying PAHs and their hetero-atom counterparts found in the environment.
