ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:

Alesha Harris, Ph.D. student in Dr. Petros' group, was recently awarded a $500 scholarship donation from the Texas Environmental Health Association for her public health work in post-Katrina New Orleans. Click here for full news story http://web3.unt.edu/news/story.cfm?story=11292 (posted 1/8/09)

Dr. Angela Wilson was recently elected one of six Titular Members of the Division of Physical and Biophysical Chemistry of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). (posted 12/22/08)

Graduate students John Alecu (Paul Marshall), David Birdwell (Guido Verbeck), Stephen Davila (Guido Verbeck), Chris Dewberry (Steve Cooke), Kerry Etchison (Steve Cooke), Smitty Grubbs (Steve Cooke), Glenn Morello (Tom Cundari) and Nisa Satumtira (Mohammad Omary) were recently awarded Graduate Student Travel Grants from the College of Arts and Sciences to attend scientific meetings for the 2008-09 academic year.(posted 12/19/08)

Dr. Guido Verbeck recently presented an invited seminar at the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in Rwanda. While in Rwanda Dr. Verbeck met with the Vice Rector of the Institute, the Dean of the College of Science and the Chemistry Department Chair for the purposes of building a relationship between UNT and KIST. Mohammad Omary, associate professor of chemistry and Arup Neogi, professor of physics, were featured during the 10 p.m. newscast Nov. 13 on CBS11. The broadcast explains their research with nanoparticles and medical applications. The professors are developing light-activated nano devices that could be implanted in cancer patients to deliver targeted treatment. Both are members of UNT's new Bio/Nano Photonics research cluster, a collaboration of 15 faculty members across nine departments. (posted 12/9/08)

Three undergraduate research students in computational chemistry - Matt Amme (Cundari Group), Kevin Holmes and Jeremy Lai (both of the Wilson Group) - have been named regional semi-finalists in the Siemen's competition. (posted 10/27/08)

Drs. Angela Wilson and Tom Cundari are part of a team of UNT researchers that will receive a $6.36M contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory to study the chemical and materials properties of jet engine components. (posted 10/27/08)

NSF-REU SUMMER PROGRAM:

ANNOUNCING OUR NSF-REU PROGRAM FOR SUMMER 2009

Deadline for applications is March 2, 2009; although earlier applications are encouraged!

The Department of Chemistry offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the following areas: Bachelor of Arts with a major in Chemistry; Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with Teaching Certification; Bachelor of Science in Chemistry; BS in Chemistry with a Concentration in Forensic Science Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy with a major in chemistry; and concentrations at the graduate level in analytical chemistry, chemistry education, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and industrial chemistry (M.Sc. only). Students may also focus their research in the areas of computational and materials chemistry.

Recipients of the BS in Chemistry, and in some cases the BA and BA with Teaching Certification, are certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as meeting requirements for professional training of chemists. Courses required for ACS certification may be obtained from the Chair of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee.

At the graduate level, student stipends, including teaching assistantships and research fellowships, are available from a variety of sources. Further information may be obtained from the Chair of the Graduate Affairs Committee. Other scholarships may be available.

The Department has an active chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma. The Beta Eta Chapter of AXE is very active by performing Chemical Shows, selling goggles for lab classes, organic model kit sales, hosting mixers, hosting an annual chili cook-off, and is active with other AXE chapters in the area.
