TA's, RA's AND SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION:

UNT and the Department of Chemistry offer a variety of scholarships.

Department of Chemistry has recently received a scholarship through the College of Arts and sciences and is looking for well-qualified candidates for UNT-sponsored Graduate Research Fellowships (GRFs). The GRF comes with a $25,000 stipend, full tuition waiver research assistantship. The Fellow is paired with a faculty mentor. More information on the GRF scholarship can be found at the following: www.chem.unt.edu/crgf-flyer2008.pdf.

The Toulouse School of Graduate Studies offers $20,000 Doctoral Fellowships and $8,000 Masters fellowship. Students receiving these awards must be nominated through the individual department.

Additional information on current University Scholarships offered through the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies can be found on the graduate school "all about money" website: www.tsgs.unt.edu/all_about_money.htm

We ask that applicants fill out the TA application and graduate school application; both of which that can be done on line and sent to us via e-mail. Once we receive these applications and the other necessary items for consideration for admission (transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores and TOEFL (if required). WE AUTOMATICALLY CONSIDER ALL APPLICANTS FOR ANY AND ALL SCHOLARSHIPS THAT THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR.

TA's and RA's

Graduate students at UNT are funded through a variety of sources. However, normally students begin their graduate studies on a TA. During your first semester, you should interview all of the faculty in your area of interest (and other areas as well) and decide who you would like to work with. Students make their choice known to the faculty member who decides if he/she will be taken into the research group.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

Our admission requirements are the same for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.

In order to apply for admission and a T.A. in the Department we require the following documents:

1. Two letters of recommendation. We do not have recommendation letter forms. Please ask those writing your recommendation letters to use their university or company letterhead.
2. GRE scores. We suggest obtaining a GRE score of at least 391 verbal and 555 quantitative before applying. Normally much higher scores are required for a T.A.
3. International students are required to submit a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based exam) or 213 (computer-based exam). Normally much higher scores are required for a T.A.
4. Official transcripts from all universities attended.

Applicants may temporarily submit a copy of their transcripts, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores. The official documents must be received before formal admission to the University can be granted.

REQUIRED APPLICATIONS:

In order to apply for a T.A., fill out the T.A. application on the web. When you click the submit button, this form will be received in the Chemistry Department. You may also print the application and send it with the other required documents.

We ask that you PRINT the applications to the University and mail the completed applications directly to the Chemistry Department. Even if you go on-line and fill out the materials, please do NOT submit the application directly on-line. Instead, PRINT the application and send it directly to us in the Department. This is extremely important as it will greatly expedite the processing of your application materials and avoid the chance that you will not be considered for a T.A.

Applications for admission to the University can be found on the following websites:

U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents can find the application here.

International Students can find the application here.

Please send all of your documents, including letters of recommendation, to the following address:

Chair, Graduate Affairs Committee
Department of Chemistry
University of North Texas
Box 305070
Denton, TX 76203

Applicants will be notified as soon as the application materials are received in the Department.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

There is no formal application deadline. However, decisions for T.A.'s for Fall are usually made beginning in December and end around mid-February. It is, therefore, important that applicants get all of their application materials in before the beginning of December as incomplete applications will not be considered.

Normally there are no T.A. positions for those beginning the graduate program in the Spring semester. However, depending on the class size in the Fall, there may be a few T.A. positions available.

Full-time students may not begin the program in the Summer. Students enrolling in the part-time Industrial Chemistry and Chemistry Education Masters programs may begin the program in the Summer.

Please feel free to contact us via e-mail at: chem@unt.edu or by phone at (940) 565-3554 with any questions.
