Johannes (Hans) Wilhelm Geiger

Working with Ernest Rutherford at the University of Manchester, Hans Geiger invented the counter that bears his name in 1908. He and Ernest Marsden, both working for Rutherford, in 1909 conducted the famous Geiger-Marsden experiment (gold foil experiment) that proved the existence of the atomic nucleus.
