ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:

On April 30, 2008, the Department of Chemistry held its annual Honors Day Ceremony. Awards ranging from entering the University in Fall 2008 to the outstanding Ph.D. student were honored. Details and picturs can be found at the following url: www.chem.unt.edu/awards.htm. (posted 5/9/08)

On April 10, 2008 the Dean's office, in conjunction with the chemistry department, hosted a Masters Hall Reunion for 1950s era chemistry graduates in the new chemistry building. Reflections on life as a student in the then new Masters Hall and the influence of past faculty on the graduates were the order of the day. There was no short supply of happy memories. Attendees included Wanda and Leroy Whitaker, Jack Buttram, Doug Layne, Rachel and Roy Sonntag, and Virginia and Norman West. Photos of the event can be found by clicking here. (posted 5/5/08)

Gavin Williams, Ph.D. student in Dr. Angela Wilson's research group, has been nominated and selected as a participant in the 58th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates which will be held in Lindau, Germany. This particular meeting will bring together young researchers from all over the world to meet and interact with scientists who have won the Nobel Prize in physics. (posted 4/17/08)
Prof. Paul Marshall has received a $280,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support studies of how traces of sulfur in hydrocarbon fuels influence combustion and the formation of nitrogen oxide pollutants. (posted 3/14/08)
David Birdwell, Stephen Davila and Nicole Ledbetter from Dr. Guido Verbeck's research group each won a $300.00 Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Graduate Student Travel Grant. They will be attending the 56th ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry. The date and location is June 1-5, 2008, Denver, Colorado.

In addition, Kameron Jorgensen won one a $300.00 Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Graduate Student Travel Grant to attend a conference at a later date. (posted 3/14/08)

Prof. Angela Wilson has been elected as a Member-at-Large (member of the leadership group) of the Division of Computational Physics of the American Physical Society. She will serve a three-year term beginning March 2008. (posted 3/10/08)

The Department of Chemistry offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the following areas: Bachelor of Arts with a major in Chemistry; Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with Teaching Certification; Bachelor of Science in Chemistry; BS in Chemistry with a Concentration in Forensic Science Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy with a major in chemistry; and concentrations at the graduate level in analytical chemistry, chemistry education, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and industrial chemistry (M.Sc. only). Students may also focus their research in the areas of computational and materials chemistry.

Recipients of the BS in Chemistry, and in some cases the BA and BA with Teaching Certification, are certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as meeting requirements for professional training of chemists. Courses required for ACS certification may be obtained from the Chair of the Undergraduate Affairs Committee.

At the graduate level, student stipends, including teaching assistantships and research fellowships, are available from a variety of sources. Further information may be obtained from the Chair of the Graduate Affairs Committee. Other scholarships may be available.

The Department has an active chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma. The Beta Eta Chapter of AXE is very active by performing Chemical Shows, selling goggles for lab classes, organic model kit sales, hosting mixers, hosting an annual chili cook-off, and is active with other AXE chapters in the area.
