Dr. David W. A. Sharp (left), professor of chemistry at the University of Glasgow, and who has edited the Penguin Dictionary of Chemistry, has given an interesting insight into the history of protactinium. He states that he has conversed with Cranston who said that most of the protactinium work was performed at the University of Strathclyde (then the Royal College), before the announcement was made in Aberdeen {LINK: Aberdeen}. It is not unusual for a total piece of work to be performed in stages at more than one place (an example being Moseley and atomic numbers {LINK: Oxford and Manchester}.). Dr. Sharp stresses, however, that "By far the most importance discovery of Soddy was the concept of isotopes."
